Low self esteem Counselling NZ

Self-esteem is how you think and feel about yourself; this may be positive, negative or move between the two points. This usually dictates how you live your life and the decisions you make – and how you view others too.

Self esteem is linked to self confidence. Confidence is related to action, it’s a belief that you can succeed at something. So, you can be confident about one area of your life, but totally unconfident about another.

Self esteem is the value you see yourself having in the world. It is related to a broad sense of personal value or self worth. If you have high self esteem at work, you probably have it in other areas of your life too, because this is a reflection of how you see yourself.

Self-esteem is about our own relationship with ourselves and how we feel deep down about who we are.

Symptoms of low self esteem

The more positive feelings you have about yourself, the higher your self-esteem is; the more negative feelings you have the lower your self-esteem is.

Symptoms of low self-esteem:

  • feeling worthless
  • feeling incompetent and unrealistic about our abilities
  • feeling unloved

  • being overwhelmed with fear and negative thoughts
  • being unrealistic about goals
  • being drawn into destructive relationships

  • fear of change
  • distorted views of self and others.

You may feel:

  • insecurity about dating

  • insecurity about social interaction

  • insecurity in relationships

Although I mainly draw from person-centered and solution-focused therapy modalities, I often integrate aspects of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). Supporting clients to change unhelpful patterns, and find connection and meaning in their life are key aspects of my counselling.
